Chapter Seventeen
For the last several hours, my mother has been trying to contact the aunts, who, as usual, are not responding. I have also tried calling them with no luck. No one is sure what to do next.
âMaybe we should go back to Isla Flora,â Dad declares as he sits on the grayish-blue sofa beside Andoâs sleeping form; his body curled-up into a ball with his teddy bear, Alfredo, tucked under his chin.
âWe canât!â Mom barks, causing me to jump, the calming effects of being around Melody the Muse, my probable great-grandmother and matriarch of our Siren line obviously wearing off. Unfortunately, with Melody not around to suppress my motherâs hot temperament, David and I are unsheltered from Hurricane Marina.
Slightly afraid, Dad stares at her, a worried expression across his handsome features.
âWhy not?â he asks after a moment of silence.
âBecause⦠because,â Mom tries to explain, but can only say: âJust because, alright?â
âNo, Marina,â Dadâs voice becomes stern. âOur children are in danger here! Things are trying to harm them! This woman, Melody, claims to be your grandmother⦠correction, a Muse you believed died hundreds of years ago.â
âIt wonât matter if we go home or not,â Mom reveals with a teary-eyed glance.
âWhat do you mean by that?â I butt-in.
Silence.
âExplain,â her husband interjects. âPlease!â
For as long as I can remember, Davidâs sentences become more abrupt and to the point the more agitated he is. Right now, he must be at the end of his rope. That is never a good sign since Momâs temper tends to flare when my stepfather is in this heightened mode. Ando and I have learned to make ourselves scarce during times like these. Unfortunately, we are in no position to run and hide, and besides that, our parents might need referees.
Mom finally concedes and says:
âOne of the reasons why we had to come here this summer⦠â
âYeah?â both Dad and I respond.
Mom pauses again, her eyes darting to the windows, but her gaze is locked on the horizon.
âThereâs more,â she sighs sadly. âMuch, much, more.â
Mom looks at her husband before continuing.
âI told you about The Calling.â
Dad nods, acknowledging that she has.
âBut I didnât tell you or Selena,â she mumbles, turning to me next, âwhy itâs important for her to be here this particular year⦠her sixteenth year.â
âWell, that certainly sounds ominous,â I grumble under my breath, feeling like I am suffocating under many layers of fleece blankets.
My stepfather sits straighter, his brow furrowed.
âWhat is the importance of being in Capri for her sixteenth year?â he quizzes suspiciously, but my mother remains silent. Her hands are moving at her sides as if they have a mind of their own. All of this is just making my stomach hurt more.
âOut with it, Mom!â I interject, more than a little perturbed at her and this awful sounding news.
Finally, she sits on the loveseat, clasps her hands in her lap, takes a soothing breath and begins.
This cannot possibly be good.
âThere is a reason why I lived on land for the first
